CITY STREET STACK (HACKNEY STACK)

£2,000.00

An improvised abstraction incorporating elements of local buildings and imaginary architectures. The painting is a reaction to the changing environment around my Hackney Wick art studio. It attempts to visually capture something of how the London Plan and the housing crisis have altered the local landscape. The composition combines fragments and passing moments from the housing developments seen from my studio window.

The use of squares and rectangles represents the TV/PC screens, windows, and other architectural elements that are an intriguing spectacle for my daily viewing pleasure. This is visually special at night in the darkness of my studio, observing the flickering alterations/on/off of monitors and room lights, thus creating an ever-changing grid of illuminations. A major inspiration for this painting. The band of red is synonymous with the ‘HW’ emblem that was carefully graffiti-ed onto the large wall of 43 White Post Lane (outside of the current entrance to Hackney Wick Train Station). The huge ‘HW’ tag was covered over by the ‘Coca-Cola’ logo that was painted on as a backdrop for its corporate product advert, before admirable people repainted the original ‘HW’ letters to restore local pride.
